THEME I: Making it easier
We work to make life on a day-to-day level smoother for both our colleagues and our patrons. But where are the good hand-outs? The easy-to-use web sites? The short-cuts to finding bond yield rates on CANSIM?
8:30-9:00 Muffin, coffee, folder distribution & introductions
9:00-10:30 Technical Wizardy I: Beyond 20/20

Love it or hate it, it's here to stay (for a while, at any rate). We will approach this from the vantage point of teaching students and colleagues how to "hot wire" Beyond 20/20

Exercise: The Shell Game: Beyond 20/20 in three steps, with a Geosuite add-on

11:00-12:00 Technical Wizardry II: CANSIM

CANSIM II is on the horizon, but not yet in the driveway. What do you need to know about finding data in CANSIM today, and what will you want to know when the long-heralded CANSIM II finally arrives?

The Flavours of CANSIM: Overview & exercise

LUNCH!
1:30-3:00  Shortcuts I: Public service and best practices

A guide to handy handouts (electronic or paper), tip sheets, citation guides, popular products for information, and web sites for data.

 3:30-5:00  Shortcuts II: Your choice!

Everyone has a favorite product which they find their students use, or products which they do not use because they do not have time to explore each and every title on the DLI site.

We asked you to vote; these are the winners which we will spotlight in the 1 ½ hours available.

Title Brought to you by…
Occupational Surveillance in Canada Elizabeth
Health Regions Elizabeth & Siobhan
Geosuite Siobhan
Trade data Elizabeth & John
Financial Performance Indicators Siobhan & John

Evening: Dinner on the town: The Delights of The Library!

Friday, 3 MARCH 2000
THEME II: To know it is to love it
Most of our work on a day-to-day basis involves working with aggregate data (also known as ready-to-wear numbers). Good reference involves knowing your collection; this morning, we will enhance our knowledge of the collection by looking at the content of the more popular DLI surveys and files.
8:30-9:00 Gather, find your favorite workstation, and get ready...
9:00-12:00 Knowing the Collection I: Deconstructing a Table

Deconstruct a table to find out what the numbers mean and why a researcher or student might need to go beyond the printed table in Canadian Social Trends [we'll do it gently!]

Exercise: Canadian Social Trends and NPHS

LUNCH!
1:30 - 2:35

Knowing the Collection II: DLI Files and their use

An update on finding files and a look at the use of the National Population Health Survey by researchers, faculty and students

Includes a look at the new STC search page, as well as a handout on finding health data. Through the life cycle of the data file, we will look at the DLI web site, web FTP'ing, and the tracking page. [We will also entertain questions on ordering and get info on what's needed].

2:35-3:00

Public service issues

Introducing data to students and promoting data with faculty; Roundtable on ways we've seen data used in classrooms, our involvement, what hasn't worked, promotion, cataloguing, etc.

Roundtable: C. Humphrey, chair (P. Ross, M.MacLeod, P. Webster, panelists)

3:10-5:00

Tying up the loose ends:

  • The CANSIM II launch date and impact on ESTAT
  • Flipchart questions
  • Census 2001 and quiz results
  • Research Data Centres
  • National Data Archive Consultation
  • The Future of DLI
  • Future training requests

FAREWELLS and GOODSPEED!
